Das Leben der Anderen

Scene after scene, I sat there and thought about how unfair our world is. 34. Did you hear that? 34. First movie. Fuck. Such perfection. Hang on. 1989? What the hell? Full happiness during last ten minutes. Of course, nobody's perfect. Even if you have a name like Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Ha Ha! Life is alright again. Guten tag.

I've been thinking exactly the same thing (the first part of your post) since I saw the movie a month ago. A post has been swirling in my head, but I am still blown away by 34-first movie-oscar. Ok, screw the oscar: 34-first movie-such brilliance. Amazing.

hands down awesome.

but why the hullaboola about him being 34. really? I infact am just amazed by the unfairness of the world when I see any eastwood film. think of doing that after being in the "industry" for a whole lifetime.

On a different note, among all the other perfectly done elements Ulrich Mühe stands out as the best. Just that he can draw so much from his own life (his wife had been on the stasi payroll and he found out only after the wall fell)...

I'm not sure what the big deal about being 34 is. It's neither particularly young (Ray was 34 when he directed Pather Panchali, Kubrick was 34 for Lolita, Tarantino was 29 for Reservoir Dogs, and the list of great films Godard made before he was 34 are too long for this comments space), nor particularly old to be discovered.

BM: Not a big fan on Clint, so won't say much. But yeah, see what you mean.

Falstaff: Look at who you are comparing. Next you will be claiming these are all very ordinary directors.

Not necessarily 34, but first ever feature.

Veena, I finally did the post. Hopefully it explains why I am so blown away...
